I've just had my first story published on A Teaspoon and an Open Mind! It's a Sherlock crossover called "The All-Consuming Fir", and it's based on exactly the ridiculous concept you might expect from that...

I've written a couple of TTR drabbles, so I'll have something to talk about in 2016's Fanfic Year In Review.

And since adwc is, well, "quiet" is putting it mildly these days, I thought I'd publicise them here.

They are "The Ubiquitous Assassin" (spoilers for Big Finish's Mastermind) and "On My Way".

Post a line or snippet from each of your fannish works in progress, and invite people to ask questions about them.

Unlike the last time I did something like this, I've decided to interprete "work in progess" as meaning "things I have at least read over and thought 'I should do some more work on this' in the past six months" rather than "all the stuff I've ever written but haven't completed". So instead of 27, we've got five. And despite the fact I only completed one filk out of those 27 works, only two of them are on this list as well. (The Wold Newton stuff in particular I kind of gave up on when the site that was publishing it stopped accepting submissions.)

And after some deliberation, I have decided to finally reveal what The Novel-Length Storytime That I've Been Working On Since May 2008 actually is.

(In the comments to my previous go at this, I say "at the speed it's currently progressing at, look out for the first six chapters some time after Matt Smith regenerates". I thought I was exaggerating for humorous effect...)

Happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] john_elliott! Have a 500 prompts fic! (See, I haven't forgotten all about them, honest!)

(And a quick reminder, if anyone else wants to wait several months for what will probably end up being a ficlet, the list is here.)

Okay. I need something to take my mind off things. Let's do this.

Memed from [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook and [livejournal.com profile] john_elliott

STEP ONE: Match a pairing/character/crossover characters to a prompt.
STEP TWO: Repeat STEP ONE as many times as you want.
STEP THREE: Wait patiently.
STEP FOUR: READ ALL THE FIC!

Yeah, that took longer than I thought. I found myself utterly stymmied by the first question, moved on to the others, and then kept thinking "But I don't have an answer for the first one yet". And I still don't.

Okay, here's what I've got so far. And. everyone, please feel free to make a suggestion for the remaining 20 pairs.

From [livejournal.com profile] vatine, who may not have read the meme all the way through: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11 and 13 are building a robot, what happens?
He later said I could whittle it down if I wanted, so I decided to go with the first three pairs: Lois and Clark; the Fourth Doctor and Romana; and Lancelot and Guenevere from Arthur King of Time and Space.

1. Pick five fandoms. List them in alphabetical order.

2. Visit this site to find your first RANDOM POEM OF POWER. Write down the 5th line (yes, even if it's an E.E. Cummings poem and you wind up with an apostrophe). Repeat five times and — you guessed it — list 'em in alphabetical order! (No cheating, mind! This is a challenge and it's always been about creativity.)

3. I think you can see where this is going. Write a very quick 50-word half-drabble for each fandom (try to do it all in one sitting — make your brain explode!), using the line from the poem as a prompt. You don't have to include it in the half-drabble — it's just inspiration.

4. Bravo! Have a cookie.

And because John did his in verse, I felt obliged to make an attempt likewise. (I didn't manage it in one sitting; I got three of them, then decided I needed sleep.)

The fandoms are Demon Knights, Discworld, Doctor Who, The Muppets and Red Dwarf.

Not been doing much fanfic lately, but I suddenly remembered I always wanted to do a "Really Stretching UNIT Dating" story set in the Roman Empire. (When what I should have remembered is that I've supposedly been working on a Storytime! since 2008, but there we go...)

So I spent a happy hour or so involved in research, coming up with funny names and period-appropriate descriptions, and trying to work out if Brigadier was equivalent to Legate or Tribune.

And then I realised the one thing I was forgetting. A story...

1) Write the shortest story you think you can.

2) Discover it's 136 words long.

3) Go through the story ruthlessly cutting out any extraneous passage.

4) Discover it's now 124 words long.

5) Restore the 136-word version and add 64 words. Call it a double drabble.

6) If you can't think of 64 new words, add 14 and call it a drabble-and-a-half.

7) Discover you've actually added 15 new words, and there's no grammatical way to remove one.

8) Give up.

Two memes

First meme:

Give me one fandom I write/rec/read AND a type of AU (space opera AU, pirate AU, superhero AU, etc) or another time period (Ancient Rome, Regency England, etc). I will then explain the gist of the story I would write for that AU.

Second meme:

Give me a pairing and I will tell you:

1. What they most commonly do during sex
2. Who has prettier hair
3. What they argue about most often
4. Who'd cope best if the other one died
5. The happiest plausible happily-ever-after I can think of for them.

(Note: I am almost certainly going to completely ignore question 1.)
