Here's a list of all my fanfic. I think.

(Blows metaphorical dust off the journal)

Hello? Is this thing still working? Goodness it's been a while. Didn't even do a Fringe post (which would have been about 30% "the shows I saw were great" to 70% complaining about the booking site). So, what's been happening more recently?

1. I enjoyed the first two episodes of The War Between Land and Sea, but I don't have the energy to actually review them. Maybe an overview of the whole thing in two weeks.

2. I also enjoyed Zootopia 2, which, after some agonising, I actually went to see at the cinema despite a lack of small children I could take as cover. (I took my nephew to the first one but, of course, that was a decade ago.) Despite my anxiety, this did not seem to attract any attention.

I don't know why my brain turned this into A Thing: no problem with Spider-Verse, possibly because that's superheroes not talking animals; but also no problem with the Muppets, possibly because that's live action not a cartoon. But for some reason, the combo triggered something in my head. But I got past it, and now that I've broken that barrier, I notice there's a Looney Tunes movie out in February...

3. It's December already, and I've just remembered Yuletide is a thing that exists. Ah, well, next year, hopefully. (As I say every year.)

4. Talking of fanfic, I've just realised I don't know how different pseuds work on AO3, but it's possible people following me as Daibhid might not know I've taken to writing Wold-Newton nonsense (or rather, cleaning up and publishing the Wold-Newton nonsense I've already written, although the most recent article is actually new) under the name DM Kennedy WNS. If you're interested in someone taking questions like "What if literally every fictional character named Tyler was actually related?" way too seriously, well, that's what I'm doing.

5. For some reason I was looking at my old posts, going back to the LJ days, and I found a questionaire meme where I was asked "Do you like drama?" and replied "Sometimes". And I stared at it in disbelief wondering what I was thinking, because I hate drama.

And then I realised that, in 2009, I didn't really know what "drama" meant on the internet. I thought I liked drama sometimes, but mostly I preferred comedy...

So, you might remember that, ages ago, I did a "10 Alternate Universes" about my own author avatar and his muse. And then compounded the nonsense level by making the "In SPACE!" AU a meta discussion about how I was trying to set it in a universe I knew almost nothing about because I liked that it had a Space Scotland.

Well, since then, a setting I am familiar with has introduced a Space Scotland, so I thought I'd give it another go.
In SPACE! Again! )

Okay, let's get back into the habit, eh? Although I should maybe have got back into the habit of actually writing stuff first. Still, I've done it with only two fics before, and at least gestured vaguely at it with one and zero, so here we go:

So the Storytime of Legend is still not anywhere even remotely close to being done, but I wrote the epilogue way back when I first had the idea, and it seemed like I should post it somewhere now.

Epilogue

“You couldn’t do it more often?” Izzy asked, “It’s such a nice change to have someone who knows how to read a children’s book properly, instead of using unsuitable material, or trying to force weird casting choices.”

Barbara shook her head “Sorry, I can’t do it regularly; as one the few H.G. Wells staff members with actual teaching qualifications, I’ve got quite enough on my plate. “

“At least you have qualifications. I keep asking the authors to write a Joyce Grenfell crossover so we can get a proper nursery teacher, but no luck.”

Barbara looked thoughtful. “I might know someone who can help though.”

The next day Wilf Noble arrived at the crèche with a handful of paperbacks. “Where do you want me to start?” he asked, “I’ve got Alice in Wonderland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Arabel’s Raven, and The Wombles.”

Izzy smiled. Maybe everything didn’t have to lead to disaster after all.

I'm not signed up for Yuletide this year. However, I came much closer to signing up for Yuletide than I ever have before!

Admittedly, this is a very low bar to clear, and would be adequetely covered by "remembering I was going to". But I also finally got round to looking up how it actually works, looked through the list of fandoms, chose three I'd like fic of and four I thought I could write, and even filled in most of the form.

...unfortunately, I did all of this yesterday, having immediately discovered that the closing date was today (9:00 UST), and in between a lot of other stressy stuff. So when I went to finish the form by writing what I liked about the fandoms and the kind of fic I liked, my brain broke. I'm not great at specifying stuff or asking for things in the first place, and I just couldn't think. But I certainly wasn't going to send it off blank, so I didn't send it at all.

(Yes, if I was here more often, I'd have seen my friends talking about it before now. But I wasn't.)

Anyway, now that I know the system, I'm probably going to have a look at pinch-hitting and treats, and I know what I'm doing for next year, so here's hoping.

daibhidc: (Sci Fi)
Okay, let's do this.

So I was sorting out my folders, and it turned out I wrote less than half of this two years ago, didn't get any inspiration for the rest, and gave up. By replacing two of the AUs, I've now completed it.

Something to take my mind off things.

Give me a character/pairing and I will write snippets of ten different alternate universes for it. One line, ten lines, a ficlet if you're lucky.

Canon Divergence
Coffee Shop
Shapeshifters
Mirror Universe
. . . In SPACE!!
Historical
Fusion
Emergency Services
Supernatural
Steampunk< (Previously done: Agnes Nitt; Black Widow; Captain America and Rey; Baldrick; the Doctor/River; Rincewind; Supergirl;  Kermit the Frog/Miss Piggy; Del Trotter; Benton Fraser; Ford Prefect; Fitz/Simmons; Bill/Heather; the Seventh Doctor and Ace; Lister/Kochanski; and Granny Weatherwax)

It's been one of those weeks where I ignore all my year-old WIPs because I've had A New Idea, write a handful of introductory paragraphs, and then realise I have yet to attach that idea to anything that might be called a plot. I don't know when or if I'm going to get any further with it, but I'm quite pleased with the thinking behind it, so I thought I'd share. (It's a Kim Newman Diogenes Club/Drearcliff School thing, so if you don't read those, it probably won't mean much.)

So I'm not doing the writing meme this year, because I completed one fic. "2x2" was an Arthur, King of Time and Space fic starring Arthur and Noah, and it had the best/worst first line, last line, title, not synopsis because it didn't have one, and so on.

Instead, I'm doing the WIP excerpts meme, with "in progress" meaning that I worked on them in the past year, Thereby assuring myself that I was actually writing in 2019. Here we go.

So I thought I'd share an excerpt from my absolutely ridiculous WIP (well, the most ridiculous of several absolutely ridiculous WIPs) because I don't know how long it's going to take, and I want people to appreciate how absolutely ridiculous it is.

(I'm at the point where I've written up all the cool scenes that inspired me to come up with the thing in the first place, and I now have to join them together in an interesting fashion.)

So here's a taster of Anno Duckula: 1987.

Yes, really.

Yes, the Discworld Year of the Justifiably Defensive Lobster is at an end, and as we enter the Year of the Incontrovertible Skunk, it's time for me to look at my fic and think "Was that all?"

(I actually meant to do this on the 2nd of January holiday, but I got distracted by sorting out my fic list. I've added a couple more categories, inserted a couple of things I forgot to add at the time, and most importantly, finally fixed all the LJ links, nine months after I deleted it and a year and eight months since I moved to Dreamwidth.)

(As ever, I've changed a couple of them because I like Mirror Universe and Steampunk. But I've decided to have a go at Coffee Shop for once, instead of swapping it for Cyberpunk,)

I've previously done this for Agnes Nitt; Black Widow; Captain America and Rey; Baldrick; the Doctor/River; Rincewind; Supergirl;  Kermit the Frog/Miss Piggy; Del Trotter; Benton Fraser; Ford Prefect; Fitz/Simmons; Bill/Heather; the Seventh Doctor and Ace; and Lister/Kochanski.

(Note to self: the second batch aren't in the fanfic list. Also, it's been six months since I deleted my Livejournal; maybe I should do something about all those dead links?)

Oh, yeah, two stories of varying but non-zero ridiculousness I wrote recently and then forgot to publicise in any way.

The Doctor Who drabble "Really Stretching ... Something", which is a Thirteenth Doctor story where I cleverly get round the fact we don't know what she's going to be like by giving her one line of being bemused, and is also a not-much-of-a-surprise crossover.

And the Furchester Hotel (yes, really) double drabble "Mr Dull Makes a Telephone Call" in which, with the literalism one expects of CBeebies episode titles, Mr Dull makes a telephone call.

And now [personal profile] thisbluespirit 's meme request.

Anyone else want to throw characters at me?
