So, on a bit of a fanfic high after uploading "The All-Consuming Fir" to Teaspoon, I opened chapter three of "Discworld's Finest" to poke about at it for a bit, as I've been doing on and off, mostly off, since 2003.

And after I'd poked at it for a bit, I thought "You know, this kind of looks like it might possibly be ... finished?" The idea took me so much by surprise that I almost panicked about it.

So, after a few days of double checking it really is finished, polishing up the epilogues I wrote ages ago, and reminding myself how Fanfiction.net actually works, "Discworld's Finest" is finally completed. And here it is.

So it just goes to show, sometimes the Things From The Depths Of The Hard Drive do actually get completed. Maybe there's even hope for that Storytime! (You know, the one I said I was going to publish once I'd got halfway but that might be "some time after Matt Smith regenerates", and that was meant to be a joke, because "The Eleventh Hour" hadn't even been broadcast yet...)

Choose 5 OTP’s without looking at the questions behind the cut first, then tag friends to do the same.

I'm always useless at the shippy stuff, but here goes:

2. Clara Oswald/Danny Pink (Doctor Who)
3. John Watson/Mary Morstan (Sherlock)
4. Floyd Pepper/Janice (Muppets)
5. Clark Kent/Lois Lane (DC Comics)

It's rather disorienting to be writing this in a hotel which is neither of the ones I was at during the Con (we're currently in York). But I didn't have time to do it before I left, and I'm going to lose track of things completely if I leave it until I get home.

Brilliant stuff. Particularly liked the nods to Thomas the Tank Engine and The Railway Children, as well as the continuing saga of the goblins.

There was one joke that wasn't in it that I was kind of expecting, though...

Post a line or snippet from each of your fannish works in progress, and invite people to ask questions about them.

Unlike the last time I did something like this, I've decided to interprete "work in progess" as meaning "things I have at least read over and thought 'I should do some more work on this' in the past six months" rather than "all the stuff I've ever written but haven't completed". So instead of 27, we've got five. And despite the fact I only completed one filk out of those 27 works, only two of them are on this list as well. (The Wold Newton stuff in particular I kind of gave up on when the site that was publishing it stopped accepting submissions.)

And after some deliberation, I have decided to finally reveal what The Novel-Length Storytime That I've Been Working On Since May 2008 actually is.

(In the comments to my previous go at this, I say "at the speed it's currently progressing at, look out for the first six chapters some time after Matt Smith regenerates". I thought I was exaggerating for humorous effect...)

As all Discworld fans know[1], the new novel is out in November and involves steam trains being introduced to the Disc. And the reaction I've seen includes a lot of comments to the effect of "Discworld advances from medieval fantasy to the Victorian period" or even "Discworld goes steampunk!" And these comments annoy me, because they're wrong.

Happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] john_elliott! Have a 500 prompts fic! (See, I haven't forgotten all about them, honest!)

(And a quick reminder, if anyone else wants to wait several months for what will probably end up being a ficlet, the list is here.)

Yeah, that took longer than I thought. I found myself utterly stymmied by the first question, moved on to the others, and then kept thinking "But I don't have an answer for the first one yet". And I still don't.

2. Seventh Doctor (Doctor Who)
3. Granny Weatherwax (Discworld)

Right, I haven't thought this through; Part Three, which will cover the play, closing ceremony and whatever random stuff happens tomorrow, will probably be Wednesday. Unless I try writing it on the train, which will make it even more erratic than this already is.

Since I've now got a laptop, I've made the questionable decision to write my con report while I'm actually at the convention, during a brief period when stuff isn't happening. The advantage of this is that it's marginally less likely I'll forget stuff. The disadvantage is that I'm still on a convention high and may be a bit confused. So here's my recollection of yesterday and Friday in this celebration of Professor Sir Dr Dr Dr Dr Dr Terry Pratchett D. Lit, D. Lit, D. Lit, D. Lit, D. Lit, OBE, Blackboard Monitor[1]

1. Pick five fandoms. List them in alphabetical order.

2. Visit this site to find your first RANDOM POEM OF POWER. Write down the 5th line (yes, even if it's an E.E. Cummings poem and you wind up with an apostrophe). Repeat five times and — you guessed it — list 'em in alphabetical order! (No cheating, mind! This is a challenge and it's always been about creativity.)

3. I think you can see where this is going. Write a very quick 50-word half-drabble for each fandom (try to do it all in one sitting — make your brain explode!), using the line from the poem as a prompt. You don't have to include it in the half-drabble — it's just inspiration.

4. Bravo! Have a cookie.

And because John did his in verse, I felt obliged to make an attempt likewise. (I didn't manage it in one sitting; I got three of them, then decided I needed sleep.)

The fandoms are Demon Knights, Discworld, Doctor Who, The Muppets and Red Dwarf.
