So ... movieverse Prof X is still British, but Moria Mactaggart is now an American CIA agent?

The phrase "What the flip?" springs to mind...

I'm not usually a fan of romantic comedies, but there's something about this one that interests me...

Hey, I saw this on Monday, and never posted a review!
I say thee SPOILERS! )

Cool, it's got the Ultimates' "This-is-what-a-WWII-superhero-would-actually-wear" costume, which was probably the best thing in Ultimates! And it looks like it doesn't have Ultimates' "A-WWII-superhero-would-actually-be-kind--of-a-jerk" thing.

Here’s how it works: go to Wikipedia (as the most convenient resource), and copy the list of movies that were released in the year when you were 12 years old. Mark in italics the movies that you’ve seen. (Not necessarily that year.) Mark in bold the movies that you own on video, DVD, Blu-Ray or whatever. If you’re not sure if you’ve seen a movie, you haven’t.

I was 12 in 1988.

... or is Tim Curry's Long John Silver in Muppet Treasure Island basically Jack Sparrow seven years early?

That was pretty good. Shortly before going I read the SFX review, and they weren't terribly impressed, but I enjoyed it.
Some of what follows might qualify as spoilers. )

I recently read in SFX[1] that Guillermo del Toro, annoyed with people describing the forthcoming Hobbit II as "filler" or "bridging material", insists it's an essential part of the story.

Now, it may well be a perfectly good and worthy film. But given the story's been around for nigh-on sixty years, and we've never needed it before, it can't be that essential, surely?

[1]An old issue of SFX, that I hadn't finished at the time...

I've been reading about the new Star Trek movie. For those who don't know, this is a prequel movie, set shortly before the Original Series, with a new cast playing Kirk and co[1]. One of the things I read was that there was a time-travel element to it, and as well as Sylar-from-Heroes as Young Spock, there would also be Leonard Nimoy as Old Spock, emphasising that this was the same universe, not a total reinvention like Battlestar Galactica

This made me think of something which they probably aren't doing, but which I think would be a really good idea. This is, basically, the feature-length pilot the original series never got at the time.

So, by the rules of Star Trek feature-length pilots, there should be a quick cameo by either Scott Bakula under several layers of aging make-up or Jolene Blalock with grey hair.

[1]Oddest casting decision so far: Simon Pegg as Scotty. As it said in SFX, his only similarity to James Doohan is not being Scottish...
