So, if anyone's interested, this links to john_amend_all's Unconventional Courtship Generator with Discworld characters. Have fun, and if it inspires anyone to actually write a story (as opposed to boggling and occasionally calling for brain bleach, which is all it's inspired in me so far), I'd be delighted to read it.

Just been sorting through the hard-drive, and found a number of semi-written filks. Some of them don't need much effort to be ready to inflict on you lucky people. Here's the first:

This was ages ago, haven't I written it up yet? Okay, here we go.

It was a good Fringe. I was only down for three days, but I saw The Reduced Shakespeare Company's Shakespeare's Long Lost First Play (abridged), Mort by the group who did Faust Eric last year, and stand-up by Mitch Benn, Robert Newman and Barry Cryer and Ronnie Golden. And they were all excellent.

It looks like, what with one thing or another, we definitely aren't going. To everyone who is, have a good one, and hope to see you in 2018.

Instead, I'll probably be making another trip to Edinburgh, so look for rambling Fringe reviews instead...

Not really memed from anyone this time; I was just bored and remembered its existence.

The rules are:

1: Pick five fandoms. List them in alphabetical order.

2: Visit this site to find your first RANDOM POEM OF POWER. Write down the 5th line (yes, even if it’s an E.E. Cummings poem and you wind up with an apostrophe). Repeat five times and - you guessed it - list ’em in alphabetical order! (No cheating, mind! This is a challenge and it’s always been about creativity.)

3: I think you can see where this is going. Write a very quick 50-word half-drabble for each fandom (try to do it all in one sitting - make your brain explode!), using the line from the poem as a prompt. You don’t have to include it in the half-drabble - it’s just inspiration.

[3.5: If you don't think this is enough to make your brain explode, follow john_amend_all's example and make the demidrabbles themselves poems. That ought to do it.]

4: Bravo! Have a cookie.

I was just taking it back to the library when it suddenly occurred to me that people here might be interested to know I wrote a review over on Phil Sandifer's site. You can find it here, and be warned it contains spoilers.

(It also contains a tiny bit of criticism, because I don't think it's a proper review if you're just gushing about how wonderful something is. This is why I never refer to my Doctor Who posts as reviews.)

Spent much of the day in Dynamic Earth. I've been a couple of times before but it's still neat.

And I knew seeing Rincewind run,
Through Ankh-Morpork was lots of fun,
And it could keep me happy for a while.

But then I read the news so bitter,
Coming from Facebook and Twitter,
No more on the forum,

I do remember that I cried,
When I read the last tweet he'd provide,
'Cos something touched me deep inside,
The day the magic died.

I was singing
So bye-ee, Sir Pterry OBE,
Took a tanker down to Lancre, but all I saw were trees.
And all the fans were blogging their memories,
Saying this is what the man meant to me.
This is what the man meant to me.

Did you read the Octavo?
And do you know when reannuals grow?

And music filling Buddy's soul?

Well, I knew that there were more like me,
When I first encountered afp.
They showed me to a chair,
There was an alligator over there!
I was a social-phobic with a student debt,
Chatting away back on Usenet,
The friends I made and later met,

Paul Kruzycki dunked in custard mix,
And all the others who their time could spend.

And as we reached the Maskerade,
Our quacking left the host dismayed,
The costumes done so well,
Winners were hard to tell.
And as we talked throughout the night,
To celebrate what he did write,
I saw Terry chuckle with delight,
But then the magic died.

Took the left fork to Ankh-Morpork down by the Circle Sea.
And all the fans were blogging their memories,

I met a girl who sang some filk,
And many others of that ilk,
But didn't know just what to say.
I looked at what the novels said,
And learnt that a man is not dead,
Until the ripples he made fade away.

And on the net we cried and laughed,
We quoted words sublime and daft.
As long as his name's spoken,
The world does not seem broken.
And at eight o'clock we all did post,
In honour of the Discworld's host,
And raised our glasses in a toast,
The magic does not die.
