I figured it out! About halfway through I said "I bet neither of them are real." (As jblum says it was obvious Upper Leadworth wasn't real).

The story was pretty cool; a choice between two realities, which is actually a choice between the Doctor and Rory. And then it gets spun round so choosing "the Doctor's reality" is choosing Rory. And the Dream Lord, well, he's the Valeyard done right.

If there's a criticism to be made it's this: What's with the anti-ponytail sentiment?

The clue that both "realities" as fake is the "Dreamlord" chappie can appear in both. Once you've worked that out then all the wibbling about how a star radiating cold wouldn't work can be ignored like so much of Who-verse physics. I liked it, although since I suffer really badly from false awakenings this is pretty much my nightmare writ large. The only thing I'd condemn this episode for is reviving the damn Valeyard debate again, I honestly thought we finally nailed that one to the ground, cut off its head, stuffed its neck with garlic, and buried it at a crossroad after The End of Time did away with the Timelords once and for all.

I for one am heartily sick of that particular bit of old school fanwank and wish it was never mentioned again.

But that's just it - the next time someone wants to write about the embodiment of the Doctor's dark side, they won't feel obliged to use a dull continuity nightmare of a character with a ludicrously complex plan to seize control of the Doctor's regenerations and take over Gallifrey. They can use a character who gets some good lines, has a relatively simple origin, and simply wants the Doctor to suffer and die.
