Okay, so I've got an 8-month-old iPod Nano. Yesterday, it was nearly out of charge, and I recklessly listened to Radio 4 until it shut itself down in protest. So I took it home and plugged it into the computer. I wasn't too worried when it didn't react to this, because hey, out of charge. I was a little concerned when the computer called it an "unknown device", but I reasoned that, if, it was out of charge, it couldn't communicate with the computer.

That was about 20 hours ago. The iPod does not appear to be charging. The Troubleshooting section of the online manual seems to be saying it should be charging, and beyond that, its advice is "the five Rs". I've done Retry and Restart, Reinstall doesn't appear to be relevant, and Reset and Restore rather depend on the iPod being charged.

Any advice?

I asked Rob and when I mentioned the "unknown device" part, he said that sounded bad....

If it's only 8 months old, it should still be under warranty though - he reckons you need to take it back to the reseller you bought it from or the Apple Store - this one would appear to be your nearest :- http://www.stormfront.co.uk/inverness/

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news :(

My computer says all kinds of weird things; I'm more inclined to believe it's gone mad again than that the iPod's irrepairably broken.

If the mains charger doesn't work, I'll return it.

If you have a mains charger for USB devices, I'd try charging it with that for an hour or so then trying the computer again, I know my old iPod Touch won't charge from the computer or be recognised by it if the battery's been completely drained.

I don't, but a quick phone call confirms that my sister does, so she's taking it round.

It's now fully charged, and the computer recognises it again! Thanks!

Good, mains charger was going to be my suggestion.

What probably happened is that there needs to be a negotiation between the device and the computer before the computer emits charge-worthy current on the USB port and if the device it's sufficiently out of charge, this doesn't really work. The mains charger does not have this issue.
