Smallville - Roulette
Jul. 1st, 2010 01:40 pmPretty solid episode.
This finally resolves the Fall of Ollie Queen storyline (say, that sounds familiar) and introduces another DCU villain: Roulette from JSA.
Roulette is an interesting character in the comics, and the series gets her about right[1]. There's a few alterations: in the comics she runs a casino that is secretly a gladitorial arena, with kidnapped metahumans either fighting each other or performing "challenges", while a criminal audience places bets.
Since Smallville's already done a "Fight Club" episode, this version focuses on a "challenge" rather than a battle, and while she does seem to run a casino, the gambling aspect of the actual storyline is more conceptual. This should annoy me as much as the Toyman story where he's not using weaponised toys, but in this case the character's schtick still comes across, just in modified form.
I'm not sure about the final twist that it was the Chloe and the League who set all this up. I suppose it worked and no-one got hurt, but it'd be interesting for them to run into her again, only this time she really was hired by the bad guys.
[1] Interesting that they chose an Asian acresss. In the comics, Roulette has the dragon tattoo and the red chipao, and I think she wears chopsticks in her hair, but the twist is she's clearly Caucasian.
