1. Reply to this post, and I will choose four of your icons.
2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.
3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.
4. This will create a never-ending cycle of icon squee! Or something.
Kennedy Crest
This is the clan crest of the Kennedys. I created this version myself in MS Paint, because I wasn't happy with any of the versions I found online. People who know me on Usenet and have the X-Face facility will know that I use a very similar version there.
The crest is a dolphin[1]. I keep meaning to find out why, but all I can find online are weird conspiracy sites pointing out that "Dealey" (as in Dealey Plaza) sounds a bit like "dolphin". The clan chief was also Marquis of Ailsa, after a tiny island in the Firth of Clyde, and there may well be dolphins swimming around Ailsa Craig, so maybe that's it. The belt is a standard peice of Scottish heraldry, and means I'm not a member of the clan chief's immediate family.
The motto means "consider the end", which my Dad always said accurately represented the attitude of a clan whose chief sent his eldest son to fight for the Redcoats, and his second son to fight for the Jacobites.
I chose this as my default icon for much the same reason I chose an online identity that was my name in Gaelic; I'm vaguely proud of my heritage, in much the same way as Tiffany Aching is proud of being an Aching whose family never left the Chalk; it might be nice to be proud of something else, but you've got to be proud of something. Also, I like dolphins. I live near the Moray Firth which is famous for them, but I've hardly ever seen one.
[1]I know it looks nothing like a dolphin; it's a heraldic dolphin, like a tyger. It actually looks more like a dolphin than many versions, since I gave it a snout, whereas the clan pin on my denim jacket has a sort of distorted mouth. I've seen Kennedy crests with realistic dolphins, and they just don't look right.
Ceannaideach
It's a photo of me. It's from the same strip (and may well be the same photo) that's in the The A-Files. Another one's on my ID card at work. I originally got the strip done for my student card. That was about ten years ago but I don't look that different (at least, not in this one, which is too fuzzy to show the acne). Come to think of it, I'm still wearing that top and jacket...
This is one of several icons I added early on. I started with LJ when I learnt the latest Pro-Fun Hoedown (a bizarre Massive Multiplayer Round-Robin, created by
capriuni on alt.drwho.creative) was taking place here. I noticed a number of people were using different icons to represent different characters, so I decided to use the default icon when I was just generally progressing the story, and the photo of me to represent my author avatar's viewpoint.

Bob the Muse and Chelonidae
More characters from the Hoedown, used when a section is largely told from their perspective. Bob the Muse is my muse. All the other author avatars seemed to have them, so I decided to join the crowd. Bob's role in the story was to be a mysterious figure, a source of resigned cynicism and common sense, and to puncture Daibhid's fanboy wibblings. Initially, I tried to draw him, but my artistic skills weren't up to it, so I settled for his shapeless hat and the name.
This wasn't a problem with Daibhid Chelonidae, who is supposed to look cartoony. At some point before the Hoedown,
narm00 and I created a cartoon version of Nameless (a town outside Doctor Who continuity ceated on adwc) filled with Toon versions of Doctor Who characters. For some reason I decided it would be fun to add a tortoise version of myself I'd created years earlier, and once a character that silly was a part of the DW fanfic world, he naturally had to come to the Hoedown too. The icon is meant to look like the Ceannaideach icon, only with a cartoon tortoise.
The Hoedown currently appears to be dormant, but since another long-forgotten round robin has recently been resurrected on adwc, I live in hope. (If I had any ideas, I'd kick-start it myself, but I don't.)
