I just got an e-mail reminding me that someone whose name I don't recognise (not that that proves anything) has invited me to join Facebook.

What freaked me out was that underneath it said "Other people you may know on Facebook" and the first two names were my sister and a friend from college.

Seriously, how does Facebook know that?

There's a tool on Facebook that let's users look for people they know, which involves giving the tool access to their email address book. It sounds as if those prople have used that tool and Facebook has thus acquired your address and linked it to them.

But [personal profile] rhiannon_s's explanantion is zalso possible :-)

More than one person I know had that happen and came to that same conclusion.

Thankfully, I think I clicked a "don't invite me to effing Facebook anymore" thing before they instituted such a thing.

Well I am on Facebook, but have eschewed use of the tool on question as I don't think giving that sort of thing access to my address book is a good idea.
