Remember when I was saying I hoped Karen Gillan's character was going to be Scottish (if not actually Invernesian)? Well, the name "Amy Pond" doesn't exactly sound Scots, does it?
Apparently, it's from Hampshire.
Of course I'm not actually going to get all up in arms about the fact we haven't had a Scottish companion since Jamie, and of course it's still possible she is Scottish, but her grandparents were from Hampshire.

Date: 2009-07-21 10:55 am (UTC)I suppose it's entirely possible she could be Scottish with a surname like Pond. I know of plenty of Williamses, Joneses, Thomases etc who are English through and through.

Date: 2009-07-21 07:00 pm (UTC)Generally speaking, and it's a total generalisation, but when it comes to relocation within the UK, England tends to be where people go, not where the come from. And the less common a surname is (Pond isn't terribly common even in Hampshire, I think), the more I'd expect it to stay in one place. An Invernesian called Williams (http://www.qype.co.uk/place/351367-Williams-Inverness) works for me, one called Pond ... not so much.
