Techie question
Jan. 12th, 2019 11:50 amMy phone is weird.
It's been fairly weird for a while now. Its main problems in the past few months have been that when it powers up, it takes up to an hour to admit it has a sim card, and that it sometimes then decides to devote all its power to getting uncomfortably hot. I probably shouldn't have learned to accept that, but I have, because I've had it for less than a year. But now it's got a new one.
It started on Thursday, when I was informed my O2 data bundle had run out, and I needed to add £10 to the phone to get a new one. And by "informed" I mean "sent repeated identical text messages with between five minutes and no time at all between them".
The following morning I attempted to do so, and discovered "Top-up" was no longer in my contacts. Neither was "Balance", "Bolt-Ons", or any of the other O2-related numbers.
Thinking quickly, I went to my call history and actually saw the phone forget "Top-Up" and replace it with the number. I called the number anyway, and added £10 to the phone. When this was immediately followed by the same message again, I thought it'd probably take a little time to register.
I continued getting the alerts, with what felt like increased regularity, all Friday. I'm still getting them now.
I've checked my bank statement, and the money came off my account. I haven't checked the balance on my phone, because see above.
The weird(er) part is: I was on Twitter yesterday. Apparently, whatever's going on doesn't actually stop me using data. On the other hand, Mum's sent me a text I never got, but that sometimes takes more than a day anyway.
I've checked the contact list isn't filtered. I googled tech forums, and it doesn't look like anyone's come up with this one before.
I had the idea of experimenting by swapping sim cards with Mum's phone. However, Mum's got a bigger phone and her sim is set into something to make it bigger too, and I didn't want to start mucking about with that, especially as she was expecting a text from Sky about one of our many other tech problems.
(Oh, and I had a voicemail, which was somehow a recording of the last outgoing call I made. I don't know if that's relevant.)
Any thoughts, beyond getting a new phone?
