The Fish Without the Sea (Discworld)
Total number: Gosh, 30. And that’s counting all the AU fic collections as single fics. If we separate them out, it’s, um … 135. Can that be right? Apparently, finally finishing Discworld’s Finest in 2015 freed up more fic-writing time than I thought.
Character breakdown:
Counting the AU fic collections once: The Twelfth Doctor appears in three fics; Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg, Blackadder, Baldrick and William Murdoch in two. Everyone else appears in one.
Counting the AU fics separately: Yeep. Okay, I think this should be right…
10 fics: Black Widow, Captain America, Rey, Rincewind, Del Trotter, Ford Prefect, Supergirl, Leo Fitz, Jemma Simmons, Baldrick (yes, he appears in one additional fic, but doesn’t actually appear in the Another Gender AU), River Song
9 fics: Kermit the Frog (because I copped out on Pirates)
8 fics: Agnes Nitt (only mentioned in Police/Firefighters and Urban Fantasy), Miss Piggy (same as Kermit, plus only mentioned in Another Gender), Eleventh Doctor, Edmund Blackadder
7 fics: Benton Fraser (copped out on Police/Firefighters, plus only mentioned in Pirates and Cyberpunk), Arthur Dent
5 fics: Rodney Trotter, Ray Vecchio, Hank Henshaw
4 fics: Phil Coulson
3 fics: Granny Weatherwax, James Olsen, Twelfth Doctor
2 fics: André, Nanny Ogg, Twoflower, William Murdoch, Zaphod Beeblebrox, Cat Grant, Alex Danvers, Grant Ward, Melchett, Kevin Darling
1 fic: Everyone else, probably.
Best/worst title?
I’m quite pleased with the play on Sir Terry’s “The Sea and Little Fishes”.
The AU fics don’t actually have titles, so they’re probably the worst (I put some of them on AO3 as “Ten Alternate Universes:”). I was never sure “Completely Bricked” worked as well as I wanted it too. Just using the Random Lines of Power as titles for the poemfics worked better in some cases than others.
Best/worst summary?
Oh, the best has to be Rocktor Who’s “UNIT! Meet the UNIT! They’re the modern Stone Age military!”
The capital-D-Dimensions in the “Completely Bricked” summary was probably a mistake. If you don’t get the reference it’s just confusing; if you do, it maybe looks a bit trying-to-be-too-clever.
Best/worst first line?
The opening line of “It Takes One…” is a bit of a run-on sentence, but it establishes the setting, gives Sarah a reason for being there, and makes a joke, all at once. So I’m quite pleased with that.
Most of the rest just launch straight into dialogue, which isn’t great but isn’t desperately bad, especially for a ficlet.
Best/worst last line?
“Completely Bricked”: “At least it wasn’t the universe where he turned into a pastel-coloured horse”. Yes, for both. On the one hand it’s a cheap attempt to shoehorn a punchline onto a story once I reached the point where it stopped. On the other hand, I will never not be amused at the thought of grumpy old Twelfth becoming a My Little Pony. (On the third hand, froborr did it better: “For creatures that don't actually have arms, there's far too much hugging on that world.”)
Looking back, did you write more fics than you thought you would this year, less than you thought, or about what you predicted?
A heck of a lot more. I didn’t realise how much more until I started this meme.
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted last year?
I guess “The Fish Without the Sea” was a bit of an unexpected genre-shift, while I enjoy reading Sir Terry’s more serious stuff, I’m generally more comfortable with the Disc’s light-hearted absurdist side for my own fic.
What's your favourite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.
I’m really pleased with “Rocktor Who and the Silurians”, which takes an utterly absurd idea and just goes for it.
Okay, NOW your most popular story.
The Agnes Nitt AU ficlets got 37 kudos on AO3, which was nice, and a bit overwhelming.
Story most underappreciated by the universe?
Since I joined AO3 in order to do my really clever fake-crossover Justa Lotta Animals/Scavengers stories, it’s a bit disappointing that one of them got one kudo, and neither of them attracted any comments.
Also, nobody cares about the Diogenes Club except me and pedanther.
Story that could have been better?
I think maybe I rushed out the Del Trotter AU fics because I had really good ideas for some of them, and I should have waited until I had better ideas for the others. The Born Another Gender one in particular is very much me floundering around for something to say.
While I think it kind of works as-is, long after writing the Captain America/Rey Shapeshifters where Steve inexplicably turns into an eagle, I suddenly remembered about CapWolf, which would obviously have been better. I could even have tied the transformation to his arriving in the Star Wars universe, by making the Moongem a Star Wars artifact. Ah, well.
Sexiest story?
Um, there’s some very vaguely alluded to UST in the Due South Born Another Gender. I think that’s about it.
Saddest story?
“Fish Without the Sea”, no question.
Most fun?
I think probably “Rocktor Who” or one of the AU collections.
Story with single sweetest moment?
Probably “Fish Without the Sea” again.
Hardest story to write?
As mentioned above, I struggled with some of the AUs. (In particular, I eventually abandoned half the prompt for what should have been a Black Widow/Tom Sawyer crossover, because there were just too many moving parts.) The ridiculous constraints I’d set myself for the fake crossover proved more challenging than I expected as well.
Easiest story to write?
A lot of the other AUs just … happened. I thought “Okay, if Benton Fraser was in the wild west, how would that go?” and just wrote what came next. I’m not sure that was the best way to write them, but they seemed to turn out okay.
Did any stories shift your perceptions of the characters?
Not really, no.
Most overdue story?
I still need to do most of the 500 Prompts, and I still haven’t given up on that Storytime! Oh, and for some reason I thought that after spending ten years writing “Discworld’s Finest”, I’d have the sequel sorted in a couple of months. That turned out to be wrong.
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
I don’t know if “actually putting your stories where people who don’t know you might see them” counts as a risk, but I finally joined AO3. And what I learned is that people I don’t know are really nice.
What are your fic writing goals for next year?
Just to keep writing, maybe have another look at the 500 Prompts. Oh, and now that I’m on AO3, perhaps find out how this Yuletide thing works before autumn.
