Yet another fanfic that hit a snag...
Mar. 16th, 2016 06:09 pmI had a great idea for a fic.
Well, okay, I had a great gimmick for a fic. An homage to those classic comic book fake crossovers, where Team 1 at Publisher A fights thinly disguised pastiches of Team 2 at Publisher B, while Team 2 is also fighting a thinly disguised Team 1 in their own book. (Justice League v Heroes of Angor/Avengers v Squadron Supreme; Freedom Fighters v Crusaders/Invaders v Crusaders; New Teen Titans v RECOMbatants/DNAgents v Project Youngblood). I was particularly inspired by the Titans/Agents thing where both books actually told the same story, the only difference being which team died at the end.
And I wrote it, or them, and I went to upload them to fanfiction.net. Luckily, it made me check the rules of submission before I did. Because there on the list of Actions Not Allowed was "2. Rewriting names of characters/locations of one story in order to upload to multiple categories."
Which is precisely the underlying joke of my stories. I could just post one of them, but it wouldn't be the same. (If I was just posting one, what I'd probably do is rewrite it into an actual crossover. And rewrite it quite thouroughly, since at the moment it mostly hangs on the gimmick.) Ah, well. Somewhere else, assuming there is somewhere else that doesn't have that rule...

Date: 2016-03-17 05:02 pm (UTC)The first (and I suspect this may just me getting precious about my original concept) is that I'm not sure how well it would work as two parts of one story. It's still the same story twice, and what (I hope) would be cute as two stories is liable to just be irritating if the second one is presented as a continuation.
(I briefly considered interleaving them, but that would be worse. There was a story I read recently that did it well, but it was focusing on the differences between its alt!Superman and alt!Batman teams. In my one, with the exception of one character's speech patterns, they really are basically the same.)
The practical one is that I'd still need to put it under a category. And whichever fandom I pick, that's suddenly become the "real" version of the story, with the other one being an adjunct.
I'll think of something. (If nothing else, I can always post them here!)
