Before the Flood
Oct. 10th, 2015 09:35 pmHmm. Not sure that's going to be one of my favourite episodes.
The Ghost Doctor cliffhanger was striking enough that it didn't occur to me last week, but I'm not a huge fan of Meanwhile in the Future stories, especially inconsistant ones (Holo-Ghost Doctor appears as soon as the Doctor travels back in time, but Ghost O'Donnell doesn't appear "until" she's actually killed). I'm also not a huge fan of "the Doctor's a git", and especially not stories that stop dead so we can get lectures about how the Doctor's a git.
And it didn't help that all the haunted house tricks seem to have been used up last week. Or that the Fisher King himself doesn't have the clear throughline between character and plot that I associate with good Doctor Who monsters. He's just a generic galactic conquerer who looks like Marvel UK's Death's Head and happens to be able to do this thing. And roars like the lead singer of a band I don't listen to.
Anyway, there were things I liked. Cass continued to be a great character. O'Donnell being a fangirl was fun (especially the bit where she clearly wanted to talk ouside the Doctor's earshot and I thought she was up to something, but she just wanted to squee about the TARDIS). The idea that the village was actually a fake Russian village for military manuveures was neat and gave the 1980s scenes a bit of atmosphere. The ghosts themselves were still scary. And I still like the idea of the Tivolians. (ETA: Oh, and the electric guitar theme was cool, as was the temporal physics lecture leading into it.) But ultimately, it just fell a bit flat for me.
Ah well, next week looks fun!
