That was really good!

I liked the opening assault on Baron Strucker's base (although it was the first of too many scenes that said "Hey, check out the 3D!"; especially annoying as I wasn't watching in 3D. But I'm getting used to the idea that all movies do this now). That aside, it gave an excellent look at the team working as a team, before Tony's hubris ruins everything.

I enjoyed all the cameos; from War Machine and Falcon at the party (and then Rhodey in the final battle and Sam in the final scene) to Heimdell and Agent Carter in the hallucinations. A good take on Wanda's power; instead of all this Chaos Magic/probablity-altering stuff, which seems to mean whatever a given writer wants it to, she's a psychic with TK. And the future-cameo of Ulysses Klaw, which I assume is set-up for Black Panther.

Ultron was fantastic; written and played as the exact opposite of how a robot villain who wants to replace humanity is supposed to behave.

Lots of nice character moments. Bruce and Natasha surprised me, but it actually works. The running gag about using bad language in front of Cap was cute, although I saw the punchline coming a mile off. And the reveal that Hawkeye has a wife and kids was very unexpected. (The complaints from Renner that his character was barely in the first film have definitely been addressed.)

The bit with them fighting an unending swarm of Ultrons was reminiscent of them fighting an unending swarm of Chitauri, which I hated, but in the previous movie my problem was that it just felt like killing time until they solved the problem another way; they were never going to run out of Chitauri. Whereas in this one they firstly have a goal - keep the Ultrons away from the engine - and secondly they are actually whittling down their numbers in a noticable way.

I was a bit shocked by Quicksilver's death. Partly because as soon as I saw Hawkeye trying to save that kid, I thought "Oh, god, it's Joss Whedon. He's given Clint a family just so..." and then when Pietro rushed in I thought "Oh, Whedon's resisted the urge to kill this time." And then he hadn't. But apparently Taylor-Johnson is signed on for the next one? Amazing resurrection, or voice in Wanda's head?

The next one's the one that's all about the Infinity Gems, yes? Maybe part of Wanda's plotline will be that she's tempted to try to use the Gems to get her brother back.

The way Ultron was played didn't quite work for me - largely because of, as you say, it not matching my expectations for a genocidal robot - until someone pointed out the obvious thing I'd missed, which is that his penchant for banter is one of the things he gets from his father.

I was amused that in a movie full of CGI-enhanced characters, Andy Serkis was playing one of the ones who wasn't.
