Apparently there's this guy in Japan who wants change the law so he can marry a comic book character. Which prompted The Scotsman's literary columnist to express an interest in Sasha Bordeaux and Flora MacIvor from Waverley (who isn't a comic book character - yet, but give Alan Grant and Cam Kennedy time), before aknowledging that Sasha's in a relationship with Mr Terrific, and Flora's dead.

So, which fictional character would you like to marry? It's a question I'm struggling with because most of my favourite female characters are people I'd find deeply intimidating if I actually met them. Hawkgirl, Susan Sto Helit, Geneviève Dieudonné... Thursday Next is possibly the least scary, but she's married to Landen.

Not marry, but I'd love to have Modesty Blaise as a "friend". One of the reasons being that she makes an effort not to be intimidating.

Sam Carter (but she'd never forget O'Neill). No, wait ... C.J. Cregg (no, she marries that hairy journo. Bugger). How about - Sarah Jane Smith? (Hmmm. Other People's Kids). Perhaps Susan Ivanova? No, too scary. No, I've got it. Intelligent, good-looking, and very handy with a bow. It's got to be Maid Marian. And it's got to be this version (http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/maidmarian/index.shtml).

Nope, sorry, Judi Trott is the one and only Marion.

Maybe so, but Kate Lonergan is the only true Marian (especially with the short haircut ...)

Anyone who says different gets sent to Worksop.

I don't know if I like Genevieve - she's a bit scary, even when she's in a good mood - but I've enjoyed the time I've spent in her company.

Hard question. Droolworthy, interesting character and marriage material are very different things. For example, you'd have to be pretty nutty to want to share a life with Jack Sparrow, no matter how handsome you might think he is.

There are a few though, that seem like good husband material. Landen, from what little we see of him, Wash from Firefly...Giles if he wasn't so much older than me. Possibly Carrot.

I've always wanted to date Willie Garvin, but he's definitely not long term material. In fact, you need to not invest emotionally at all to make that one work.

Thing is, the flaws, jobs and storylines that make people interesting characters are also very often things that make it an eminently bad idea to get involved with them.

Oh, and also - these people need therapy.
