I forgot to talk about this yesterday.

So, Lancelot, who in myth was the son of King Ban of Benwick, is a commoner. He's still the Best Knight In The Land, however, and this story gets to be about how he becomes a knight on merit, rather than right of birth. Sort of...

Well, first he becomes a knight through lies and deception, gets discovered and thrown in prison. Then Arthur (who's becoming a lot less of a jerk as the series progresses) releases him, they fight a griffon together, and Arthur tries to persuade Uther that he deserves to be a knight. But then Lancelot leaves rather than either lie further by taking credit for the griffon's death, or drop Merlin in it by saying he saw him kill it with magic.

This rewrite of his origins does mean that he can have Meaningful Interaction with Guenevere (since it's made quite clear that, except for their personal servants, none of the nobles in Merlin notice anyone without a title exists unless they're actually spoken to directly, and then they take offence at this affrontery). And there's a line which I think probably counts as a Mythology Gag:

Merlin: Yeah, but if you had to choose: Lancelot or Arthur?
Gwen: Well, I don't have to, and I never will.

Edit: I missed this at the time, but bonus points for naming the court geneologist Geoffrey of Monmouth.
