That was awesome!

Not by any means a simple Whoification of The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, it managed to contain numerous references while telling its own story.

And the portrayal of the Doctor is a pitch-perfect followup to the fallout from "The Wedding of River Song". Here's a man who has decided he's not the saviour of universes any more, and he's just going to be a madman with a box ... or in this case, two boxes ... doing fun and whimsical and entirely not-dangerous things. And, of course, it doesn't work out that way, and a planet needs saving...

What made this episode interesting isn't that the monster wasn't the baddie; Doctor Who's pulled that one many times before. It was that despite not being the baddie, the monster came across as more dangerous than the actual baddies. Even when they had their guns pointed at Madge, it was hard to take the bumbling Space Marines seriously, whereas the Wooden King and Queen seemed geniunely threatening at times.

Patented Moffat "Everybody Lives!" ending, followed by the Doctor spending Christmas with Rory and Amy for a Crowning Moment of Heartwarming.
