Merlin - Gwaine

daibhidcIt's always fun when Merlin starts playing with actual Arthurian characters beyond the regulars, especially since they do it in such a unique way.
So we get G(a)waine as basically the opposite of Merlin's Lancelot; instead of a commoner who wants to be a knight, he's a knight's son who's rejected the nobility. Same effect, though; he acts like a noble knight but still gets banished because of Uther's short-sightedness.
The "dashing rogue"-style Gwaine is a really fun character and I hope we see more of him. His flirting with Gwen prompting Arthur's jealousy, well, don't we already have Lancelot for that?
My minimal knowledge of medieval tourneys suggests the melee was accurately portrayed. (Oh, and it rhymes with "Well hey", not "telly". Learn something new every day.)
Morgana didn't get anything to do in this episode, but amazingly still managed to convey her hatred of Uther. Next week, more of this.

Date: 2010-10-07 10:54 am (UTC)The Arthurian purist in me generally reflects that Merlin is about as consistent with the legends as the legends were with each other 8-).
(Fun fact: in his effort to tie everything into a consistent whole, Thomas Mallory ended up with two swords called Excalibur, without explanation.)
And I'm sure Gwaine is going to be a favoured knight eventually. Once Arthur's king, and has changed the rules so he can marry Gwen, he'll probably change them to make Lancelot and Gwaine knights as well. After all, this is all before there was a Round Table...
