daibhidcI was wondering, vaguely, what happens to people between Commander Vimes arresting them and them getting banged up in the Tanty. I mean, there's been indications that there's some sort of trial, but there's no evidence of public prosecuters - possibly, like the judges (as described in the Companion), they'd be lawyers who Vetinari wants to punish by putting on a fixed salary?
And then, for no reason, I suddenly thought:
"In the Ankh-Morporkian justice system, the people are represented by two seperate, but equally important groups. The City Watch who investigate crimes, and the Guild of Lawyers who pocket huge fees. These are their stories."
