I don't understand sports. Any sports. So when Mum asked me to find out how Andy Murray did today, I poked uncertainly at the official Wimbledon website for a while before sadly reporting he'd lost - he scored 6766, and his opponent scored 7622. (I was surprised at how big those numbers were, but I don't know enough to question them. And, after all, it does go up in fifteens.)

Apparently, the score should actually be read 6,7,6,6 to 7,6,2,2, which means Andy won three games to one.

Eevn worse, it starts out in 15s, then swutches to 10s (0, 15, 30, 40, 50). No, I don't know this because I slavishly watch the game, I know it because I used to play (although not in any official capacity) as a kid. Good enough exercise, boring as hell to watch and nothing I wanted to do cometetively (or even enough to ever have lessons).

More correctly, it's 6-7, 7-6, 6-2, 6-2, meaning Andy won by three sets to one.

Each score represents a group of games - I think it's usually the first to win six games who wins the set, unless they're less than two games ahead of their opponent. After that it gets complicated :-)

And that's about as much as I know (or care) about it :-) Cricket is clearly invented and played by Martians.

I believe it's 60, not 50, so the only odd-one-out is 40. I gather that it's really forty-five, but it got abbreviated to forty at some point by somebody who cared more about making it easy to say than about confusing the newcomers.
