Earth Hour

With about half an hour to go until Earth Hour, and Mum asking how many candles I'd need in the kitchen, it suddenly occurred to me to double check if it was just lights, or if it was all electricals.

Which is just as well, since otherwise I wouldn't have discovered we'd got the week wrong, and it's next Saturday...

I can't help thinking it would do more good if everyone turned off things that they didn't need, all the time. But then I'm a Grumpy Old Woman.

I need the lights on, I dooooooo. No, really: if Lorne is away, I leave some of the lights on while I sleep. Waking up alone in the dark gives me the hoohaz.

I can understand that actually - I hate being alone in the dark too.

But I was meaning more in the way of turning off the telly/oven/microwave/gane console/assorted electric things when you're not using it.

Oh, I agree. But I also see the need for Big Symbolic Events.

As I understand it, the idea behind Earth Hour isn't that everyone sitting in the dark for an hour will make a noticable difference. The idea is to attract everyone's attention to the idea of switching things off.

I take your point. But being a cynical wossname, I suspect most people will (if they bother at all) think "Oh, well, I've done my bit now" and carry on as usual thereafter :-(
