About 1:30 this morning I was thinking about Doctor Who (because I forgot to take my sleeping tablet again; I realised this at 2:00, and decided it should be okay to take it then), and an idea occured to me.

So, apparently, John Simms is reprising the role of the Master. [livejournal.com profile] scarfman has tied this in with the story being something to do with dreams, because if the Master did come back, he wouldn't be John Simms any more (he'd either have regenerated or be posessing someone). And he's probably right.

But, my sleep-deprived brain argued, maybe the guy played by John Simms who announces he's the Master isn't the Master. Or at least isn't that Master.

Consider: the last scene we see in Last of the Time Lords is of a female hand picking up the Master's ring from the ashes. Now it's possible that the Master's snake-spirit-thing from the TV Movie is lurking in there, ready to pounce. But that's posession, and he wouldn't be played by John Simms.

It's also possible that there are some ashes attached to the ring, and you could do some Time Lord jiggery-pokery to bring him back to life. But that would surely count as a regeneration, and again, he wouldn't be played by John Simms.

Or would he? Because there's something else you can apparently do with Time Lord remains. Something that's like regeneration but different, that produces a superficially identical duplicate of the incarnation the remains came from, complete with memories. The first time it happened, the Time Lord the remains came from was still alive, and the source of the energies required. But I don't see why another source of energy might not produce the same result, especially when we also know that event is going to be referred to in the episode anyway.

Yes, I'm proposing that if you can get a Donna-Doctor, you can get a Lucy-Master...
