Memed from [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook

Comment to this entry and I'll pick three of your fandoms. You must then update your journal and answer the following questions:
01: What got you into this fandom in the first place?
02: Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
03: Favourite episodes/books/movies/etc.?
04: Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
05: Do you think that more people should get into this fandom?

I was given Doctor Who, Discworld and Jasper Fforde.

Doctor Who
1. That is going back into the misty mists of time. I was definitely watching it by the age of seven, if not earlier. My earliest clear Doctor Who memory is of "Mawdryn Undead", but I had a clear idea what the series was about by then, so I'd probably been watching it a while.

But I don't think I really start thinking of myself as a fan until 1990, when a new kid started at our school who'd had his bedroom redecorated to look like a TARDIS. I realised we had a lot in common, and started borrowing his DWMs.

(1990 was, of course, not the best year to suddenly start defining yourself as a Doctor Who fan. But at least we could commiserate with each other.)

2. I can't see me moving on. Even in the highly unlikely event of The Moff screwing up, and the series being ruined FOREVER!, I'll still be a fan of Old Who.

3. Oh, tricky. "Paradise Towers" is one I remember enjoying at the time. And "The Five Doctors" ... well, okay it doesn't make much sense, but it doesn't need to, it's got the five Doctors. (Okay, it's got three Doctors, a guy in a wig, and some clips, it's still brilliant.) I was a big fan of the New Adventures, especially ones by Paul Cornell or Kate Orman. And, as far as the new series goes, it has to be "Blink". Or "Silence in the Library".

4. Yeah, I discovered rec.arts.drwho at Uni, then got scared off by the Anti-McCoy Brigade. I'm now on rec.arts.drwho.moderated, which is much more civilised (usually). Every so often I consider trying Outpost Gallifrey, and then I read one of [livejournal.com profile] jblum's reports of how discussions there go, and change my mind. I've been writing Doctor Who fanfic since before I knew the word, and post to alt.drwho.creative quite a bit.

5. Absolutely.

Discworld
1. My uncle. My mum got a lot of fantasy paperbacks from him, because he didn't collect books the way she and I do, he read them once and passed them on. And one day he handed her Colour of Magic and said "David likes Hitch-hiker's Guide, doesn't he?" And that was that, I was instantly hooked.

2. Stay, definitely.

3. Probably Going Postal. Or Hogfather. Or Wee Free Men. Or...

4. Oh, yes. You know how above I said I discovered rec.arts.drwho at Uni? Well the reason I was on Usenet was because I'd gone looking for alt.fan.pratchett. I've also written a couple of Discworld fanfics, and attended all the Discworld Conventions (the only conventions I've ever been to). So, yeah, I'm involved 8-).

5. I sincerely believe that everyone should be a Discworld fan. And if people say they don't like fantasy, you just need to be careful which book you start them on.

Jasper Fforde
1. [livejournal.com profile] sloopjonb, formerly of this parish, formerly of afp, kept going on about how good they were, and everyone seemed to agree with him, so I decided to try them out. And he was right.

2. I can't see me going anywhere. To be honest, I'm not the sort of person who moves on from things; I still consider myself a Fraggle Rock fan...

3. I think Lost In A Good Book, where the whole BookWorld started coming together, and it turned out that yes, he had worked all this stuff out. Or one of the others. Or either of the Nursery Crimes books...

4. Not really. I wrote a Doctor Who/Thursday Next crossover fanfic, but that's about it.

5. Yes, but I can understand why some people (Mum) find the basic concepts a bit steep for their suspension of disbelief.

Oh, my, pre-Internet days. It was 1991 before I realised Doctor Who had gone. I was looking in the TV page every single day until I got my first DWM. At least you knew in 1990...

I got onto newsnet because it was part of my Information & Library studies initial IT model and exploring it, I looked for Doctor Who and found adwc and the IAs, which was wonderful. (I'm not sure the lecturer was right about their being newsgroups about cornflakes, though). Radw was scary but fun. Most of the time. And I'm also scared of Outpost Gallifrey.

Heh. I think Thursday Next fanfic might be enough to make your head spin round if you did try to write it.

Y'know, I really must get back to usenet. Hmm. I used to lurk and very occasionally post on afp, and the Who groups sound good. (I avoid OG too...)

Is your fic online? I suddenly can't believe I've never read any Doctor Who/ Thursday Next crossover!

I'd do this meme, except I doubt people know any fandoms of mine except DW...

This is a comment!

If you're unsure of my fandoms, most of them are in my user info

It's here (http://www.ttrarchive.com/nexts.html).

Although, strictly speaking it's less a Who crossover and more a "This Time Round (http://www.ttrarchive.com/)" crossover.

Based on your LJ posts, I give you Firefly, Supernatural and X-Men Wolverine.

If you disagree with these, let me know.

The bits of OG (or doctorwhoforum or whatever it's called these days) that I visit are fairly civilised. Among these are the Classic Series forum, the Classic Characters And Actors forum, the DVD And Video Vault, and the 'Enlightenment' fora discussing particular episodes.

Though the Seventh Doctor's era is still something of a warm button, I'm afraid.

Fabulous, although I think my brain just broke! Must read more This Time Round stuff, too.
