On balance, I rather enjoyed that.
I did like all the blatant highwayman tropes: silly nicknames, desperate rides against time, Famous Last Words on the gallows. Rufus Hound was fantastic. So was Masie Williams, although...
Ashildr is barely the character from last week. I realise that's the point, but darnit, I really liked the character from last week. Even a vague reference to her still making puppets would have been nice. She's a very interesting character, but she's basically a new one.
Lion-O was another generic villian, but he had a nicer mask than the Fisher King and wasn't actually carrying the story at any point, so I found that a bit more forgivable.
Slight groan when the sonic sunnies returned. I've been trying to work out why they annoy me; after all, it's basically the same gag as New Danger Mouse's iPatch, and I love that. I suppose part of it is that DM's always worn an eyepatch, while the shades seem a bit of an affectation.
And I foolishly hoped that the absence of Clara would mean an absence of heavy handed "Guess who's leaving this season?" scenes. But no, she pops up specially so they can do one.
So yeah, problems, but a rollicking adventure that successfully distracted me from them while I was watching it. And Captain Jack reference! Maybe foreshadowing?
And it's pretty clear Ashildr will be returning. With a fondness for storytelling and puppets? We can but hope...
