That was AWESOME!

Well ... mostly awesome. As you can tell from the userpic, I'm a bit of a fan of Blue Beetle and Booster Gold, and Smallville's Booster is brilliantly portrayed, complete with the sponsorship-bedecked version of his costume from 52. And the Booster Gold Fan Club T-shirts!

The idea that he's come back to before Clark makes his debut because he wants to take Superman's place in history is an interesting one. And amusing that Cat Grant finally decides to support a superhero, and picks this guy. All the reporting instincts of a tuna, that girl. A tinned tuna.

(I was surprised to learn that Skeets wasn't Billy West, who voiced him in Justice League Unlimited and Batman: The Brave And The Bold. He sounded exactly the same.)

And Jaime Reyes was cool too, the genuinely awkward kid who has enough strength of will to take control of an alien artifact. I appreciated the way the story tied together all three comicbook Beetles, but was a bit disappointed that this meant Ted Kord came across as a bit of a bad guy. I'd have preferred it if the guy running the sinister superweapons firm had been Jarvis Kord, and his nephew Ted was another scientist who'd been studying the scarab. He could still have played much the same role, without being responsible for the event and coverup.

What I thought was a lot less awesome was the loser-Clark storyline, even if it did make for some nice parallel narrative. Even when Clark was at his geekiest in the comics, he didn't engender the sort of contempt he's getting here, except from Steve Lombard (who was a jerk) and Silver Age Lois (who was ... well, not exactly the most sympathetic of characters either). The reference to the fact Clark had been like this in early Smallville seemed to be a nod to those of us who prefer the idea that Clark Kent is geeky and mild-mannered because, well, he's geeky and mild-mannered, but just a nod.

On the other hand, he changed his outfit in a phone booth, which was so cool I can even overlook that there's no way he was wearing the Blur's jacket under his suit.
