Yes, I'm running behind with these, although not as far behind as I was with Smallville...
"The Nightmare Man" was solid but unexceptional. Sad to lose Luke and K9 (I know the former is because he's got exams; is the latter the latest twist in the labyrinthine agreement between the BBC and the makers of K9?), but it was a good farewell episode, even if the Nightmare Man was never actually scary. I did roll my eyes a bit when he was defeated by The Power Of Friendship, but since all their nightmares were about losing that friendship, I suppose it was thematically appropriate.
"The Vault of Secrets". Given that we know the next episode is going to be Continuity City, it's surprising that this one gave it a run for its money; not only do we get the return of Androvax from last season and the Men In Black from the animated Doctor Who story "Dreamland", but the opening scene features a brief appearance of a pyramid on Mars, referring to the classic Who story um... you know, the one with the pyramids. On Mars. Tip of my tongue...
Androvax gets a bit more depth - the extinction of his people goes from being a Freudian Excuse to an actual motivation. And while "Vault of Secrets" and "Prisoner of the Judoon" involved an inflexible alien policeman in pursuit of Androvax, the Judoon is a simple soul obeying orders, quickly allied with and bamboozled, Mr Dread is working at cross-purposes to the gang right up until the end.
(Random thought one: Come to think of it, they both had references to "Dreamland" as well; in "Prisoner", Androvax tried to recreate the Grey ship, complete with ionic fusion bar!)
(Random thought two: Given it's name and role, was the Council of Shades a sub-section of the Shadow Proclamation? Did another organisation take its place, or did they just decide to leave it all to Sarah-Jane, Torchwood and the Doc?)
But minus points for the Idiot Ball plotting - If Sarah-Jane was last seen with a being that has a previous record of possessing her and is next seen acting oddly, there is an obvious conclusion to be drawn and it ain't "We must help her do the thing we thought she was trying to stop the possessing entity doing." Sheesh.
And I'd be very surprised if we've seen the last of BURRP...

Date: 2010-10-28 08:09 pm (UTC)i) I'd have preferred it if Luke had whacked the NM over the head with a fire bucket the moment he turned his back :-)
ii) And I kept imagining Toby Jones popping into existence, dressed in his butcher costume, and asking who ordered the large ham. Or watching the NM doing all that cavorting and then just giving his watch a pointed look.
