Shippy meme

Memed from [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook. I'm really not a shippy person, so I thought having to come up with answers to the meme might produce some surprises even to me...

SIX PAIRINGS I LIKE:
(Mostly canonical Official Couples)
1. Lois/Clark (Superman comics, Lois & Clark, etc.)
2. Magrat/Verence (Discworld)
3. Vimes/Lady Sybil (Discworld)
4. Carrot/Angua (yes, Discworld again)
5. Kermit/Piggy (The Muppets)
6. Nyssa/Adric (from Doctor Who, but specifically that peculiar relationship they have in the "To Die For" stories in TTR.)

THREE PAIRINGS I'VE ABANDONED:
7. Chloe/Clark (Smallville)
8. Batman/Talia (Batman comics)
9. Fourth Doctor/Romana (Doctor Who)

SIX PAIRINGS I DON'T LIKE:
(Like [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook, I have no rabid hates. With one exception...)
10. Susan/Teatime (Discworld. Yes, I've been told this exists. Just the thought makes my skin crawl.)
11. Lana/Clark (Smallville)
12. Ninth-Tenth Doctor/Rose (Doctor Who)
13. Eighth Doctor/Sam (Doctor Who)
14. Tenth Doctor/Simms Master. (Doctor Who. I'm afraid I just don't "get" the whole "Foe Yay" thing. Bad guys are bad guys.)
15. The Fake Kochanski/Lister (Red Dwarf)

TWO SHIPS THAT HAVE PIQUED MY INTEREST:
16. The Brig/Liz (Doctor Who. Mostly from [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook's stories)
17. Spock/Uhura. (Star Trek)

1. Why do you dislike #11 so much?
I don't exactly hate it. I just could never muster up much enthusiasm for it, for all the series kept ramming it down our throats.

2. Who do you know that ships #13?
Half the flippin' EDA writers. Or at least, that's what it felt like at the time.

3. What would be your ideal scenario for #3?
I dunno; the way it's going in the books seems just about perfect. It'd probably be better if Vimes retired properly or accepted that he had a desk job, so he could spend more time with Sybil and Young Sam, but I can't see it happening without him losing his Vimesness.

4. What is your favorite moment for #1?
Probably the story "From Krypton With Love" by Mark Millar in Superman 80-Page Giant #2, which is basically a Lois-POV story about why she loves Clark. (Yes, Mark Millar can do honest and beautiful emotions if he feels like it. He chooses to mostly write ironically-distanced cynicism.) Or the Lois & Clark version of the proposal: "Who's asking, Clark ... or Superman?"

5. How long have you been following couple #6?
Since I discovered TTR, which was some time before I discovered alt.drwho.creative, oddly. I'd guess around 1999-ish.

6. What's the story about #8? What made you stop caring?
Well, partly I realised that "villain's daughter who finds herself torn between her father and the hero" was a total cliche, and partly Death and the Maidens killed the Talia I knew and replaced her with some zombie.

7. Which ship do you prefer - #2 or #4?
#4, I think, simply because we've seen more of it. And I think the reason we've seen more of it is that it's more interesting; Magrat and Verence are rather similar characters, while Carrot and Angua are a study in contrasts.

8. You have the power to make one ship non-existent. Choose from #10 or #12.
#10, always and forever. Yeesh.

9. What interests you about #17?
It's something that seems to have come out of nowhere straight into canon. And it's an idea that would simply have never occured to me.

10. When did you start liking #7?
From the beginning, I think. Later I decided Chloe was more interesting as a best friend than a love interest.

11. Did your waning interest in #9 kill your interest in the series?
Not at all.

12. What's a song that reminds you of #5?
Well, "Waiting At The Church", I suppose, because they performed it in one of the few episodes we had on tape before the DVDs came out.

13. Which of these ships do you love the most right now?
Having just reread The Fifth Elephant, Vimes and Sybil.

14. Which ship do you dislike the most?
Susan and Teatime. It's just so wrong, in all kinds of ways.

15. If you could have any of these pairings double date, who would they be?
The Kents and Carrot and Angua would probably find they had a lot in common. They probably wouldn't get to finish a meal, though; there'd be a siren and they'd all have to make their excuses.

16. Have #2 Kissed yet?
Well, they're married with a daughter, so it seems likely...

17. Did #4 have a happy ending? Do you think it's likely?
So far, yes. I think it's fairly likely, as long as Angua doesn't start getting all angsty again and decide to leave for Carrot's sake.

18. What would make you start shipping #14?
The threat of violence if I didn't, probably.

19. If only one could happen, which would you prefer - #2 or #6?
Well, #2 is the canonical story of two shy people who gained strength from each other and saved a kingdom together (more or less) three times. And #6 is fanfic about a Doctor Who companion going mad and repeatedly killing one of her contemporaries for reasons she's not entirely clear on. Sorry, BK, but it'll have to be #2.

20. You have the power to decide the fate of #10.
Susan kills Teatime with a poker that only kills monsters. Just like in the book.

I'm most amused that I seem to be converting half my friends list to the idea of Brig/Liz.

I like your pairings. I don't know Smallville, but I left out books, because relationships in them have this unfair advantage over screen ones (in that actors don't leave, producers don't suddenly decide to shake things up and they're not generally written by someone different each week) and I thought it would be impossible to choose. Now I'm contemplating doing a book version, too. I'm with you very much on the Discworld pairings, except that I grow more and more distrustful of Carrot and I think it would be very sensible of Angua to run for her life. (When I read the Fifth Elephant, I really hoped she would!). I'd like to see what happened to Sacharissa and William de Worde, because you only see them separately these days and they seem to be engaged, but it's hard to tell.

I would agree that Teatime and anyone, pretty much, would be Wrong, let alone Susan. What is it with these hero/villain ships, indeed?

Nyssa/Adric would be rather amusing even in normal circumstances. Tegan would probably need to give lessons, which both would find incomprehensible.

I usually like Carrot, but not so much in The Fifth Elephant. He struck me, and I can't think of any other way of putting this, as not being himself.

(And now I'm trying to remember, off the top of my head, whether we've seen him much since, and whether he was himself again then.)

Seriously? Starting here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DB1OHGVm7E&feature=related, about 8:35 onwards. There, now you do. ;) Really, it's so unbelievably clear in this that they have some history between them.
