Daft DC Comics fanfic idea - Book One

I was sorting through my old files, and I found the outline for a very silly Green Lantern Elseworlds fanfic[1] that I never got round to completing. I probably never will, so here's the synopsis:

[1]It's actually more of an excecise in replacing characters in an existing story with their closest equivilents. But then, when you get down to it, so's Superman's Metropolis...

Elseworlds: Green Lantern - Ring of Power.

The setting is a medieval-fantasy world known as Malthous. Long ago, a huge battle was fought between the forces of Good and Evil. The focus of this battle was the Rings of Power. The Dark Lord Parallax was defeated by the forces of good, and his Ring was lost.

It was found, centuries later, by Absur, a noble man who hoped he could use it for good. Before he had the chance however, he was killed by his son, Amsur, who desired the Ring himself. Amsur seized the Ring and went into hiding, becoming a strange twisted creature, obsessed with his new posession. He eventually lost it to Arron Rainer, an adventurous member of a race of "little people" called Greenfolk.

Rainer brought it back to his home in the Evergreen Woods. Some decades later, following his disappearance, his son Ciyl Rainer was met by Ganthet the Blue, one of a race of guardian wizards, who told him the Ring's origins.

Ganthet told Ciyl that the Ring was being sought by the evil Sinestro, who intended to spread darkness across the world from his lair in Quardia. Ciyl must take the Ring to the Elven settlement of Startown, where it will be harder for Sinestro to detect, and where a council will decide what to do next.

With his faithful companions Tomas Kalmac, Terry Brandyburg, and Ghy the gardener, Ciyl sets off. Travelling through the Blackhand Downs, they are captured by an undead horror called Necron, but are rescued by the Green Man.

Stopping at the Inn of the Warrior, they meet a mysterious stranger known as the Spectre, for the way he appears and disappears. The Spectre helps them escape Sinestro's Manhunters, who can track the Ring if it's used. The Spectre later proves to be Halrald Jordain, the lost heir to the throne of the Coastlands. He guides them to Startown, but on the way the Manhunters attack, and Ciyl is rendered unconcious.

In Startown, they are greeted by Lord Alscot and his daughter Jayden. Halrald and Jayden are clearly attracted to each other.

At the Council of Startown, Ganthet explains informs them that the leader of the wizards, Krona, has turned to evil and also covets the ring. It is decided that Ciyl must take the Ring to the centre of Sinestro's power, where it can be destroyed in the volcano known as the Great Lantern.

The Spectre and Greenfolk are joined by representatives of the three major races of the world: the skilled Elven archer Oliquen, the gruff, practical-minded dwarf Kilog and the human noble Johann Steward, son of the Steward of the Coastlands.

This Corporation of the Ring sets out, and makes its way through the Mines of Bolovax, where they face hordes of savage Grundies before Ganthet seemingly sacrifices himself to defend them from the Effigy, a flame-shrouded monster.

Once through the mines, they make their way to Zamaron, an elven kingdom ruled by Queen Carriolis. She shows them visions of the future in her Sapphire Mirror, and gives them gifts for the journey ahead.

As they continue their journey, the Corporation notices a strange figure following them. This is "Evilstar", the twisted creature that Amsur became. Johan insists that they should abandon their quest; they should use the Ring's power to save the Coastlands from Sinestro's forces. He tries to seize the Ring from Ciyl, who uses it to escape. The Corporation is broken.

To Be Continued... (unless everyone reckons the single gag has reached its limit.)

Actually, I really like the parallels and substitutions. Please continue!

Certianly. Only that's as far as my original draft went, so I'll have to start writing volume two from scratch. Stay tuned!

You know, that might be worth it just for Ghy the gardener...

I don't think DC would go for it, though; they've already done the epic-fantasy-quest Elseworld with JLA: Riddle of the Beast. (Have you read that one? Very, very odd.)

Yeah. OTOH, they also did an epic-fantasy-quest Elseworld called League of Justice (a lot less odd and, IMO, therefore not nearly as interesting). And, come to think of it, the New Titans Elseworld Annual was set in the fantasy kingdom of N'Yarque, with Raven as the Dark Lord.

And there were two "literature-character-replacement" exercises based directly on Frankenstein (albeit ones that took the story in very different directions), so repetition clearly isn't considered that much of a problem...

(And while I couldn't resist the pun of Ghy the gardener, the "Sam will kill him if he tries anything" role really ought to go to Terry 8-)...)

I like your icon, BTW. Is Batman actually flying there? (Why not, he can breathe in space...)

Is Batman actually flying there?

That would be *telling*.
