Talking of LOTR...

I recently read in SFX[1] that Guillermo del Toro, annoyed with people describing the forthcoming Hobbit II as "filler" or "bridging material", insists it's an essential part of the story.

Now, it may well be a perfectly good and worthy film. But given the story's been around for nigh-on sixty years, and we've never needed it before, it can't be that essential, surely?

[1]An old issue of SFX, that I hadn't finished at the time...

It was essential to JRRT. No Hobbit, no LOTR.

Yes, that story is essential. It's the next one I don't recall anyone ever needing before.

Oh, sweet baby Bilbo! I see your point. I don't get it. If they want to milk the franchise some more, why not do the Turinssaga, or Beren & Luthien, or Aldarion and Erendis, even? Plenty of great stories to go at without inventing filler. Pah.
