The other day, Mum was talking about how much my nephew liked his new Seventh Doctor and Ace video. "Which one is it?" I asked. The reply, of course, was "I don't know". So I asked what it was about and, after some thought, she said "It's the one that's half in the machine." Then she bustled off to check he was asleep.

So I started analysing Doctor Who 1988-1989, trying to think which episode was partly set within a machine. I came up with a couple of possibilities, but I couldn't narrow it down, so I followed her upstairs and asked for further details about the nature of the machine and in what sense the story was "inside" it. Was the machine a vehicle? Was it some sort of cyberspace setting? After looking at me like I was mad for a second, she clarified. "It's the one that's sticking out of the video player. It's half in the machine."

Whoops. On the other hand: I was half way into the second paragraph before I twigged that she might have been meaning the actual cassette. It's entirely likely that Dr. Who would have an episode (or possibly whole season) "half in the machine". No, I don't want to speculate how that might be realized. :)

Hee!

Which reminds me - I have some DW videotapes that I no longer need (as we no longer have a VCR) - Spearhead from Space, The Time warrior and The Seeds of Death (not to be confused with The Seeds of Doom, especially at the garden centre) - any good to you?

If so, drop me a PM and I'll bung 'em in the post for you.
