Journal meme

Memed from [livejournal.com profile] mrs_tribble:

How did you come to start your LJ?

Back in the day, one of my Usenet friends asked if I had a LiveJournal. I didn't, and told him I wasn't sure what I'd have to say if I did. (I was also perplexed by the idea that people not only tolerated my wittering, but were prepared to seek it out.) Eventually I decided to join LJ because it was where the Doctor Who Pro-Fun Hoedown was happening that year (rather than alt.doctorwho.creative, where it had been before). I was very surprised when I started actually posting journal entries.

How did you find your first friends?

Basically, people I already knew from radw and afp. (I recently learnt, however, that the guy I friended who I assumed was the aformentioned Usenet friend wasn't. I'm glad I friended him anyway; I'm just sorry I haven't friended the other guy.)

Are those first friends still on your FL?

Yep.

How long have you been on LJ?

Six years.

Do you have more friends or communities on your FL?

Friends.

Do you do a lot of friends cuts?

Never, or indeed any maintenance of my friendslist at all. There are still people on it who deleted their journals years ago.

What do you like in an LJ friend?

Same things I like in a RL friend; shared interests, good sense of humour, patience with someone who is really, really socially awkward...

What do you dislike in an LJ friend?

Beyond the answer to the next question, it's hard to think of anything. I think I've been lucky in the friends I've got.

What would make you un-friend someone immediately?

Conscious racism, sexism or ablism, or unconscious likewise that they refuse to recognise and deal with. I've never actually had a friend like that, but if I did...

Have you been caught up in a lot of LJ drama?

Nope, I just keep my head down, just like in RL. Except one time, which was totally my fault for being an idiot on a community I wasn't familiar with.

Do real-life friends and family members know you have a journal on LJ?

Yeah, but none of them do.

Do you also have Facebook and if so, what do you prefer – LJ or FB?

I recently started Facebook because my sister was on it. I think I prefer LJ, although they're so different I'm not sure how to compare them.

What about Twitter?

Twitter is where I say whatever comes into my head; LJ is where I write stuff.

Do you blog on any other sites?

Nope.

How often do you check in on LJ?

Between once a week and once a day.

What do you rarely or never post about?

Family stuff.

Why don't you post about that?

I don't feel comfortable putting my family's names on the internet. If I do bring them up, it's a fun thing that I did with them and want to talk about, and I friendslock it, and I never mention names.

(Now that I'm on Facebook, friended by my sister, my niece and many of my LJ friends, the "no names" thing is almost completely pointless. But I still feel more comfortable with it.)

Have you ever thought about deleting your journal?

Nah, I might get bored with it and stop posting, but deleting it is a bit permenant. That'd be like making a decision about it 8-).

Have you ever changed your username?

No.

Why did you choose your current username?

It was the name my internet friends already knew me by: the Gaelic spelling of "David Kennedy". Started as my namebadge at Discworld Conventions, because I thought it was funny, and then when I joined alt.fan.pratchett at Uni, it made sense to use the same name. And then when I needed an AOL username, I chose it again, and after that it was just My Internet Name.

If you're looking for new friends, how do you find them?

I don't, really. I'm happy to have new friends, but I don't seek them out.

Are you taking new people on to your Friends List just now?

See above. If someone friends me, I'll probably reciprocate, if I remember.

Finally, tell us the reasons why you keep an online journal.

I like writing stuff, I guess.
